Course Overview: 

Trauma and Transitions is a comprehensive and CPD-accredited training session that explores the diverse types of transitions children and young people experience. The session explores primary school to secondary school transitions, entering and leaving the care system, and different age transitions for young people. This session is designed to provide participants with a deep understanding of the challenges associated with these transitions, grounded in both lived experiences and relevant theoretical frameworks. 

The session begins by examining social development theory, providing participants with a solid foundation for understanding the impact of transitions through ages in psychosocial development. By exploring the theoretical underpinnings, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by young people during transitional periods. 

The course delves into school transitions and the different approaches to managing young people’s behaviour, with a specific focus on the distinction between behaviourist and nurture approaches. By exploring the principles and techniques associated with each approach, participants will gain valuable insights into selecting appropriate strategies that align with the individual needs and circumstances of young people experiencing transitions. 

A key focus of this session is on developing the skills to effectively engage with young people, hold them accountable, and empower them to take ownership of their behaviour. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will learn strategies for fostering a positive and supportive environment that encourages young people to change their behaviour and develop healthy coping mechanisms. 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the “Trauma and Transitions” session, participants will be able to: 

  • Recognise the impact of various types of transitions on a young person’s ability to learn and feel settled, considering primary school to secondary school transitions, entering, and leaving care, and transitions for young people who have a social worker. 
  • Understand the influence of trauma on behaviour and identify the signs and symptoms that may indicate a young person is struggling with trauma during transitional periods. 
  • Apply social development theory to gain insights into the psychosocial challenges faced by young people during transitional phases and utilise this understanding to develop effective support strategies. 
  • Employ techniques and strategies to engage with young people, hold them accountable, and empower them to take ownership of their behaviour during transitional periods. 
  • Evaluate and compare different approaches to managing young people’s behaviour, specifically behaviourist and nurture approaches, and select appropriate strategies based on the individual needs and circumstances of the young person. 
  • Develop a holistic approach to supporting young people through transitions, integrating theoretical knowledge, practical strategies, and a compassionate understanding of their lived experiences.
