Course Overview 

Endings are a normal part of life, but with them come with complex emotional challenges. We can’t avoid endings, but we can certainly learn how to deal with them. Whether that’s a relationship ending, moving from a place you called home, even losing valuable possessions – all these endings come with their own traumas and opportunity to growth.  

This session looks at the impact of endings, focussing on the psychological and practical challenges that arise. Although we talk about the negative impact this can have, the aim of this session is to give you tools to communicate with young people, helping them develop coping mechanisms and foster positive mindsets towards them. 

Endings can also manifest in other areas of a child’s life; the ending of a relationship – could lead to a fear of them; moving from a place that you once called home – could make it difficult for you to settle into a new place; losing meaningful items – could represent losing an important token of your identity, or meaningful memories.  

Some of the other endings you can expect to learn about are when a child moves school, the impact of losing friendships and leaving a community filled with norms and values that are familiar.   

Each ending we explore will focus on the child’s sense of identity, belonging and how practitioners can communicate about these as positive moments of growth, whilst holding and recognising the trauma they can also cause. 

This session is filled with practical, trauma-informed approaches to help children navigate these endings. The aim is to create moments of opportunities for building resilience, developing coping skills, and instilling a healthy understanding of the inevitability of endings. 

Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Understand the complexities surrounding the ending of relationships in a child's life—what they signify and how they affect both current circumstances and future interactions.
  1. Recognise the deep emotional ties children form with places and how the loss or change of these environments impacts their mental well-being.
  1. Appreciate the significance of losing items of value, understanding their emotional and symbolic weight in a child's life. 
  1. Grasp the emotional experiences when communities change and how that impacts children.
  1. Acquire trauma-informed strategies for supporting children through various types of endings, focusing on resilience-building and emotional regulation.
