Course Overview:

“The Impact of Recording and Communication: How Statutory Recording Can Cause Stigma” is a thought-provoking and CPD-accredited training session that explores how unconscious bias influences the recording and communication practices within social work. This interactive session engages participants in activities and discussions aimed at overcoming unconscious bias when working with children who have a social worker.

Participants will delve into the different types of unconscious bias and gain evidence-based tools to raise the aspirations of young people. By examining the influence of unconscious bias on case notes, communication patterns, and decision-making processes, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how stigma can be unintentionally perpetuated.

The session emphasises the impact of the words used when communicating about children who have a social worker and the subsequent stigmatisation that can occur. Participants will explore language choices, stereotypes, and the power of framing narratives to recognise how communication practices can create and reinforce stigma. Strategies for promoting inclusive and empowering language will be discussed.

Moreover, participants will develop the skills necessary to challenge the stigma experienced by young people with a social worker. By understanding and confronting biases and stereotypes, participants will be better equipped to provide more effective support and create a safe and inclusive environment for these young people.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in a mix of activities and discussions designed to foster critical thinking, self-reflection, and the application of evidence-based tools. The interactive nature of the session encourages active participation and provides opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from one another.
